The Process of Finding a Lawyer

A lawyer can be one of the most important professionals you ever hire. The consequences of hiring a poor one can be very serious. Therefore you are going to want to make sure that you know how to find the right lawyer and that you follow these steps, it will save you a lot of trouble down the road.

The first thing that you need to do in order to find a lawyer is to determine just what kind of lawyer you need. These days almost all lawyers specialize in one particular aspect of the law. In most cases it should be pretty obvious what type of lawyer you need, if you have been charged with a crime you need a criminal defence lawyer for example. There will however be some cases where it may not be clear what type will be best. In this case you are going to have to take your best guess and call and ask if they handle that type of case, if not they will be able to tell you who does.

The next step in finding a lawyer is to get referrals from people that you know. You almost certainly know somebody who has to use a lawyer at some point in time. These can be your friends, co-workers, business associates really anybody you know. If you really don't know any one who can recommend a lawyer you will have to start picking names out of the Yellow Pages. At this point you want to make a list of at least five prospective lawyers.

Once you have a few lawyers that you are considering the next thing that you are going to want to do is a back ground check. Any Maryland lawyer can be checked out with the state bar association. This will allow you to make sure that they are properly licensed and that they have the training and experience that they say they do. You also want to check with the state Attorney General's office to see if there have been any complaints lodged against the lawyer that you are considering.

At this point you should have a list of a few lawyers that you are interested in and who have passed the background check. The next step is to interview them. You will want to talk about your case and how they plan to handle it. You are also going to want to talk about things like what their fees are and how they are determined. Most lawyers will charge you for this initial consultation so you don't want to go on too many of them. However it is a good idea to talk to a few lawyers before committing to one so that you can be sure that you are getting the best one for your needs.
